Kids Say Web Contact is Preferable to Human Contact

http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2008/04/17/5310481-sun.html

A recent study has revealed a shocking number of children prefer web contact over face-to-face social interaction. Take a boo at the article and let me know your thoughts... is the number really that shocking?

This really doesn't surprise me that much. The internet doesn't require your appearance to get someone's undivided attention. A lot of kids who otherwise might not receive that kind of attention in a social setting can talk to anyone they want. Basically, I think, kids want attention and the internet is an easy way to get it. What surprises me more is that a child psychologist was so surprised by this...

Im not surprised that kids are going online for 'attention', but the fact that they are giving out their personal information out to random people they have never met. It just seems weird to me. I admit I do use the internet, I have a blog, I use facebook. But i never put any amount of information on any of those. I was always taught that there was online preditors. Maybe children thses days should be told about this.

Hmmm.....I can understand why kids like to talk over the internet or through texting. It's easier for them to compose their thoughts and say what they really mean to say without the pressure of someone standing right in front of them. But I don't understand the appeal of talking to strangers over the internet.

Do these kids not have actual friends at school that they can talk to? The only people on the internet who talk to little kids are CREEPERS.

Online interaction makes interacting so much easier, so of course kids are going to latch on to it. You want to say something to someone? Type it. If you change your mind, hit the delete key. It's not that easy when face to face with another person. There is no delete key in real life, there the "oh shit, I shouldn't have done/said that now how do I get myself out of it?" thought. This is the healthier of the two. Kids learn through their mistakes, but if all they have to do is hit the backspace key a few times to erase what might have been said, there's no learning there.
Future generations are going to be in trouble when it comes time to step out into the real world. There are no text boxes and backspace keys when at a job interview. Or if they say the wrong thing to a friend or neighbour, no "damn I lost my internet connection" excuses. They are going to be deer in the headlights, socially undeveloped individuals.

I agree with why these kids prefer the internet. It's private and you can think all day how to respond...

With that being said, the chances of the other person truly understanding the intracicies(sp?) of what you're saying is far less. No tone, no body language.

This doesn't really surprise me at all. Im not really sure how you put a stop to all of this. I really dont think there is a cure for this unless the parents get involved...which I really don't see happening any time soon. But then again online relantionships cant be that harmful to kids...can they? So maybe the parents dont need to get involved...No they do. I guess the big thing is to make sure that the kids no how to spot an online predator. Make them aware of the bad people that float around out there in the world wide web.
