Tuition Freeze Lifted - Yet Another Sign of Global Warming?

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/manitoba/story/2008/04/07/tuition-freeze.html

Two days in advance of the budget, the Doer government has announced the end of the provincial tuition freeze for post-secondary students.

In your blogs, I want you to calculate what you feel is the actual cost of attending post-secondary school and whether or not you agree with the lifting of the freeze. Please take into account cost of living, books, entertainment, etc. when you make your argument. We will read and discuss each one in class.

If a program needs more money to give students a great education then i do feel a raise in tuition is alright. Aslong as the raise is not a very large amount that could stop someone from going to college or university tho. One issue that i feel has to be looked at is the fact that university students are forced to spend much more time in school then they should have to. First a student will take 1st year university which consists of a few classes that will actualy use later in the course and many more that will prove to be useless. I have heard many friends that go to university talk about looking for easy classes to take just to raise their grade point average which seems very stupid to me. Can't that time be spent taking courses that will actually count towards you geting you degree instead of counting towards, well nothing. I know you cannot rush a student when it comes to learning a craft but draging it on for 5 or 7 years does not make sense to me when all the BS classes can be scraped and replaced with usable ones so the student can graduate in say 3 or 4 years. If universities find themselves spending to much money then maybe they should think about getting the students threw school faster, instead of just raising the cost of tuition.
